Is Poor Visual Tracking Ruining Your Child’s Summer Sports and Reading in Brampton?

Is Poor Visual Tracking Ruining Your Child’s Summer Sports and Reading in Brampton?

Summer should give children more time to enjoy sports, outdoor activities, and reading for pleasure. However, a child with poor visual tracking may find these activities more frustrating than fun. Visual tracking is the ability to move the eyes smoothly and accurately while following words, a ball, or another moving object.

A child can have clear eyesight and still struggle with visual skills involving eye movement, coordination, and focus. These challenges may affect reading, learning, and physical performance even when the child has 20/20 vision.

How Visual Tracking Affects Reading

Reading requires the eyes to move smoothly from one word to the next while maintaining focus. When visual tracking is inefficient, a child may lose their place, skip words, reread sentences, or use a finger to stay on the correct line.

Some children may avoid reading because it causes headaches, tired eyes, or difficulty concentrating. Parents may assume the child is distracted or uninterested, but the underlying issue could involve how the eyes and brain work together.

Visual Tracking and Summer Sports

Tracking is also important for sports. Children need to follow moving objects, judge speed and distance, and coordinate their visual information with body movements.

Poor tracking may make it harder to catch a baseball, return a tennis ball, follow a soccer pass, or react quickly during fast-paced play. A child may appear clumsy or hesitant even when they understand the game and have strong physical abilities.

Signs Your Child May Be Struggling

Parents in Brampton may notice visual tracking difficulties during both quiet activities and active play. Possible signs include:

•          Losing their place while reading

•          Skipping or repeating words and lines

•          Moving their head instead of their eyes

•          Avoiding reading or close-up tasks

•          Struggling to follow a moving ball

•          Experiencing headaches or tired eyes

•          Having difficulty with hand-eye coordination

These signs do not automatically confirm a tracking problem. A comprehensive vision evaluation is needed to determine whether visual skills are contributing to the difficulty.

Why Summer Is a Good Time for an Assessment

Summer offers an opportunity to address visual concerns without the pressure of daily homework and classroom deadlines. An assessment can evaluate more than eyesight alone. It may examine eye tracking, focusing, eye teaming, depth perception, and visual processing.

At Inspire Vision Development Center, vision therapy assessments are used to identify visual challenges that may interfere with reading, coordination, and everyday activities. When appropriate, a personalized vision therapy program may include guided activities, therapeutic lenses, or prisms designed to improve how the eyes and brain work together.

Help Your Child Build Stronger Visual Skills

Addressing poor visual tracking may help make reading more comfortable and sports participation less frustrating. Early evaluation can also give your child time to strengthen important visual skills before returning to school.

Schedule your child’s vision exam with Inspire Vision Development Center to identify visual tracking concerns and help them read, learn, and play with greater confidence. Contact our office in Brampton or Orangeville, ON at (289) 505-1205 or (519) 940-8426 to book an appointment.
