Dry Eye or Allergies? What Burning and Watery Eyes May Mean

Burning, watering, redness, and irritation can make it difficult to tell whether you are dealing with dry eye or eye allergies. While the symptoms can overlap, these conditions have different causes and may require different approaches to treatment. At Inspire Vision Development Centre, we evaluate the health of the ocular surface to help determine what is behind persistent eye discomfort.

Why Dry Eyes Can Actually Water

Watery eyes may seem like the opposite of dry eye, but excessive tearing can be a response to irritation. When the tear film does not adequately lubricate and protect the eye, the surface can become irritated. The eyes may respond by producing a rush of watery tears that do not provide the same balanced lubrication as a healthy tear film.

Dry eye symptoms can include burning, stinging, fluctuating vision, redness, light sensitivity, and a gritty or tired feeling. Symptoms may become more noticeable during screen use because people tend to blink less frequently while concentrating.

How Eye Allergies Are Different

Eye allergies occur when the immune system reacts to an allergen. Common triggers can include pollen, dust, mold, and pet dander. Histamine released during an allergic reaction can lead to inflammation and irritation around the eyes.

Symptoms that may point toward allergies include:

•          Intense or persistent itching

•          Red, irritated eyes

•          Excessive watering

•          Puffy or swollen eyelids

•          Symptoms that appear after exposure to a particular allergen

Itching is often one of the strongest clues that allergies may be contributing to eye irritation.

Can You Have Dry Eye and Allergies at the Same Time?

Allergies and dry eye can occur together, which can make symptoms more difficult to identify. Allergic inflammation may disrupt the tear film, while rubbing irritated eyes can make inflammation worse.

Some allergy medications may also contribute to dryness in certain people. This is why repeatedly treating burning or watery eyes with over-the-counter drops without knowing the underlying cause may not provide lasting relief.

Finding the Cause of Persistent Eye Irritation

A dry eye evaluation allows us to look beyond symptoms and assess what is happening on the eye's surface. Dry eye can develop when the eyes do not produce enough tears, when tears evaporate too quickly, or when inflammation affects tear film stability.

Depending on what we find, treatment may include eyelid hygiene, warm compresses, artificial tears, prescription medications, meibomian gland expression, or advanced in-office therapies such as IPL, LipiFlow, and radiofrequency. Identifying the cause helps us create a more personalized approach rather than simply masking recurring burning, watering, or irritation.
