Glaucoma & Diabetic Eye Exams in Ontario: OHIP Coverage Rules & What to Expect

Regular eye exams are especially important for people with diabetes or glaucoma because both conditions can affect vision before noticeable symptoms develop. At Inspire Vision Development Centre, we provide comprehensive eye care for patients in Brampton and Orangeville, including diabetic eye exams and glaucoma testing.

Understanding when OHIP covers these exams can also make it easier to stay on top of your eye health.

Does OHIP Cover Diabetic Eye Exams in Ontario?

Yes. For Ontario residents age 20 and older with diabetes mellitus, OHIP covers one major eye examination every 12 months, along with up to two additional follow-up minor assessments when needed.

During a diabetic eye exam, we look closely for changes that may be associated with diabetes. High blood sugar can damage small blood vessels in the retina over time, increasing the risk of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. Diabetes can also increase the risk of other eye problems, including glaucoma and cataracts.

Because these conditions may progress without obvious symptoms, routine diabetic eye exams are an important part of managing your overall health.

Does OHIP Cover Glaucoma Eye Exams?

OHIP coverage is also available for adults age 20 and older who have glaucoma that requires or has required treatment with medication, laser treatment, or surgery. Eligible patients can receive one major eye exam every 12 months and up to two additional follow-up assessments.

Glaucoma can gradually damage the optic nerve, often without causing noticeable vision changes in its early stages. Our eye doctors in Brampton and Orangeville can evaluate your eye health and determine whether additional glaucoma testing or monitoring is appropriate.

What Happens During a Medical Eye Exam?

The exact testing we recommend depends on your eye health, medical history, and current symptoms. A comprehensive medical eye examination may include:

  • Reviewing your medical, eye, and family history

  • Measuring your visual acuity

  • Checking eye pressure

  • Examining the front and internal structures of your eyes

  • Evaluating the retina and optic nerve

  • Performing additional testing when medically indicated

Ontario's insured major eye examination also includes a comprehensive assessment of the eye and visual system, with additional medically necessary components performed when appropriate.

What About Routine Eye Exams?

OHIP coverage depends on your age and medical circumstances. Adults age 65 and older who do not have an eligible eye-related medical condition are generally covered for one major eye exam every 18 months, plus two additional follow-up minor assessments. Adults with qualifying medical conditions may be eligible for more frequent insured care.

If you are unsure whether your next eye exam qualifies for OHIP coverage, our team can help clarify what may apply before your appointment.
